Shah Rukh Khan has just arrived in the city after a hectic day''s shooting in Wai for his film Swades. He looks weary, but sounds ready to take on any question you may have for him.
Though he''s shooting at Wai, Shah Rukh says he isn''t finding the experience very pleasurable. "I hate villages. I''m a city guy. New York is more my style," he says.
Since the actor seems eager to field questions, we get straight to the point.
Did he agree to do Main Hoon Na only because Farha Khan is a dear friend? "Farha, Adi (Aditya Chopra), Karan (Johar).... all of us have literally grown up in this industry. And besides being my friends, they are extremely talented people. Farha''s style is very contemporary and what I like about her is that she has the heart of a man," he tells us.
Though all his films have hit the bull''s eye at the box-office, critics can''t seem to stop harping about how every SRK movie looks the same. Moreover, he only seems to be working with the Karan Johars and Yash Chopras of the industry. Ask him this and he fields it with elan. "What can I do if the best guys want to work with me? Refuse them? Why should I throw away the opportunity? They can give me hits, my price, 15 awards at the Filmfare and maybe an Oscar nomination. And yet you want me to say no to them," he counter argues.
We steer the conversation towards his two children, Aryan and Suhana, and Shah Rukh''s face lights up. The actor confesses that he pampers his children silly. "But I was strict with my son today. I was talking to him on the phone and he kept getting distracted, so I asked him to talk to me only when he was willing to pay attention. I''m already sorry," he says.
It must be quite difficult to provide his children with a normal life, considering they have been born in the lap of luxury. "I agree they are going to be a little spoilt. But what can I do? Can I say to my children, ''see we have a BMW but you walk''," he asks, tongue firmly in cheek.
As he takes another puff from his cigarette, we are prompted to ask him why he''s so indifferent about his health. "I know. I keep telling myself every day, I''m going to stop but it doesn''t happen. But come to think of it, the day I stop smoking, I will be simply unbeatable," he grins.
As we bid him farewell, the actor remarks that he''s going to eat dinner with Kareena Kapoor, who is staying at the same hotel in the city. "It''s quite late but no harm in still asking her," he says, the killer smile firmly in place!
